HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED HOW LIFE IS BECOMING MORE & MORE LIKE A BALANCING ACT?
In today's hectic society the need to be a great multi-tasker has become a must! Work, cooking, cleaning, taking the kids to school and what little left of a social life we have, are all demanding more and more of our time.
While we all strive to achieve a work/life balance it is sometimes difficult to acheive as a result of our constant pursuit to try and keep up the pace on the 'treadmill' of life.
So what do you do when this pace begins to eat away at the quality of your life?
Stress, anxiety and exhaustion are all a result of our struggle to keep up.
As our commitments and activities demand more of our time we find that we are becoming more stressed, anxious and exhausted with our health sometimes deteriorating as a result.
Living a life with this kind of stress deprives you of enjoying and living life to the fullest. It is for this reason that creating a healthy balance in your life is necessary.
So what steps do we need to take and where do we get started to get our lives back on track and in balance?
The first step is not to compare your life with others but to be honest with yourself and take a good look at what is important to you in life and what it is you are striving to achieve.
Ask yourself what you need in life to be at your best and have a think about your core values and goals and whether your honouring these in your daily life.
Recognizing the changes that are needed in your current lifestyle will lead to an understanding of what is required to gain back control of your life to achieve the happiness you deserve.
When you are in control of your life you are able to overcome obstacles and identify capabilities deep inside you that until now you didn’t know existed.
Here are some great tips to help create a healthy balance in your life.
Keep a log
Track everything you do for one week. Include work-related and non-work-related activities. This will give you an idea of where your time is being spent. Then decide what’s necessary and what satisfies you the most and cut or delegate activities you don’t enjoy and don’t have time for.
Take advantage of your options
Find out if your employer offers flex hours, a compressed worksheet, job-sharing or telecommuting for your role. The flexibility may alleviate some of your stress and free up some time.
Learn to say no
Whether it’s a co-worker asking you to spearhead an extra project or your child’s teacher asking you to manage the class play, remember that it’s OK to respectfully say no. When you quit doing the things you only do out of guilt or a false sense of obligation, you’ll make more room in your life for the activities that are more meaningful and bring you the most joy.
Leave work at home
With today’ global business mentality and the technology to connect to anyone at any time from virtually anywhere, there’s no boundary between work and home, unless you create it. Make a conscious decision to separate work time form personal time. When with your family, for instance turn off your cell phone and put away your lap top.
Manage your time
Organize household tasks efficiently. Doing one or two loads of laundry every day, rather than saving it all for your day off. Running errands in batches can also be a good place to start. A weekly calendar of important dates and a daily list of to–does will help you avoid deadline panic. If your employer offers a curse in time management, sign up for it.
Rethink your cleaning standards
An unmade bed or sink of dirty dishes wont impact the quality of your life. Do what needs to be done and let the rest go for the time being to get a few more enjoyable activities in your life.
Communicate clearly
Limit time-consuming misunderstandings by communicating clearly and listening carefully. Take notes if necessary.
Fight the guilt
Remember, having a family is OK, for both men and women.
Nurture yourself
Set aside time each day for an activity that you enjoy, such as walking, working out or listening to music. Unwind after a hectic work day by reading, practicing yoga or taking a bath or shower.
Set aside one night each week for recreation
Take the phone off the hook, power down the computer and turn off the television. Discover activities you can do with your partner, family or friends, such as playing golf, fishing or canoeing. Making time for activities you enjoy will rejuvenate you.
Protect your day off
Try to schedule some of your routine chores on workdays so that your days off are more relaxing.
Get enough sleep
There’s nothing as stressful and more potentially dangerous as working when your sleep deprived. Not only is your productivity affected, but also you can make costly mistakes, you may then have to work even more hours to make up for your errors.
Bolster your support team
Give yourself the gift of a trusted friend or coworker to talk with during times of stress or hardship. Ensure you have trusted friends and relatives who can assist you when you need to work overtime or travel.
Seek professional help
Everyone needs help from time to time. If your life feels too chaotic to manage and you’re spinning your wheels worrying about it, talk with a professional, such as your doctor, a psychiatrist or a counsellor. A personal coach can help you find ways to achieve your goals, while giving you support to keep you on track
Creating balance in your life is a continuous process. As demands on your time change due to aspects in your family, interests and work life, so too does the balance. Assess your situation every few months to make sure you’re keeping a healthy balance.
